Could High Copper Be the Reason for Your Melasma?

Copper triggers hyperpigmentation and high levels of it could be the reason why you are stuck with melasma.

Here is the scientific backround...

Tyrosinase is an enzyme that turns melanin brown. Tyrosinase is also a cofactor of copper. When copper levels are high, tyrosinase is high. Overactive tyrosinase is a typical feature in melasma.

Here are reasons for high copper levels:

👶 Child Birth

High copper levels are common post-partum. Because high copper can cause depression, some believe this to be the reason for post-partum depression.

🥗 Vegetarian Diet

People on a vegetarian/vegan diet tend to eat a lot of grains and legumes. While they are generally healthy and nutritious, these foods have to be soaked, fermented or sprouted to remove phytic acid. Phytic acid inhibits zinc uptake in the gut, leading to low zinc levels (and high copper levels).

❌Copper IUD

Copper residues may remain in uterine tissue from the removal.

❌Contraceptive Pill

Check the previous post "Melasma from the Pill?"

❌Drinking Water from Copper Pipes

❌Farming Practices

Copper is a commonly used fungicide. Copper toxicity of soils in vineyards have been scientifically proven.

Additionally, pesticides acidify our soils, leading to a reduced uptake of minerals into the produce. As a result, we are depleted.

❌Copper Bottles

A revived trend in the wellness community. Water stored in copper vessels is not new and can add benefits to water. However, drinking water from copper bottles all day long can tip the delicate balance.

If you have no idea why you have melasma, check your copper and zinc balance.

Please keep in mind that blood tests only reflect circulating copper. If you had a copper IUD removal, particles might still linger in your uterine tissues. Seek advice from a holistic practitioner or medical doctor (with an out-of-the-box mind) you trust.
